Ford Motor Company is extending its business beyond automobiles through Ford Energy; a new subsidiary focused on battery storage and energy technology.

Now Ford Energy has launched a battery energy storage business focused on the U.S. market. The company will supply domestically assembled BESS for utilities, data centers and large industrial and commercial customers.

The company said first customer deliveries are expected in late 2027. Ford Energy is aiming for at least 20 GWh of yearly deployment capacity. The move gives Ford a larger role in the U.S. energy storage industry, where battery projects are being added to support renewable energy and growing electricity use.

The company’s operations will include battery cell manufacturing, module assembly, container integration and service support. Ford Energy will also produce electrode coils as part of its manufacturing process.

The company’s flagship product is the Ford Energy DC Block, a standardized 20-foot containerized BESS platform built around 512 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic battery cells. The product line includes two variants:

·        FE-250, designed for two-hour duration applications

·        FE-450, designed for four-hour duration applications

Both systems include liquid-cooled thermal management and integrated battery management systems. Ford Energy said the products are designed for a 20-year operating life.

Manufacturing will be supported through repurposed battery production facilities in Glendale, Kentucky. The company said the production strategy is intended to support domestic content requirements and Investment Tax Credit eligibility standards for U.S. battery storage projects.

Ford previously said it would invest about $2 billion in the business. The company said the funding has been used to prepare manufacturing sites, build supply chains and expand production capacity before commercial operations begin.

According to the company, Ford Energy will manage manufacturing and assembly operations within the United States under a vertically integrated structure.

The U.S. battery storage market has attracted higher investment from utilities, renewable power developers and data centre operators in recent years. At the same time, federal incentives linked to domestic manufacturing have increased demand for U.S. assembled energy storage systems.
