A dedicated BESS policy and portal is set to be launched after the Tamil Nadu State’s Energy Resources Department finalised the framework following three months of discussions. It aims to support the state's expanding renewable energy ecosystem and promote distributed clean energy. The announcement comes as Tamil Nadu also accelerates rooftop solar adoption, with nearly 20,000 subsidy applications received and 1,500 already cleared.

Tamil Nadu is preparing to take another step towards strengthening its renewable energy infrastructure with the upcoming launch of a dedicated BESS policy and portal. Energy Resources Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar announced the development on October 7, 2026, saying that the State’s Energy Resources Department had finalised the policy after three months of discussions.
The proposed BESS policy is expected to support Tamil Nadu’s growing renewable energy ecosystem by promoting energy storage alongside its existing mix of solar, wind, and hydropower. P.N. Sridhar, Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL), said distributed renewable energy is being promoted through the policy. The state already has around 400 MW of rooftop solar capacity, highlighting the growing role of decentralized clean energy generation.
The announcement came during the Indian Solar Association’s special interactive meeting on the Tamil Nadu Solar Rooftop Programme and an exhibition in Chennai. The event also highlighted the State’s efforts to accelerate rooftop solar adoption through financial support. Nearly 20,000 applications have been received under the Tamil Nadu Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme, while around 1,500 applications have already been cleared for subsidy.
Under the scheme, eligible consumers can receive combined Central and State government support of INR 35,000 for a 1 kW rooftop solar system, INR 70,000 for 2 kW and INR 1 lakh for 3 kW. Tamil Nadu has set an ambitious target of installing one lakh rooftop solar plants by the end of March next year.
The BESS policy could add an important storage layer to this expanding renewable energy base, although the PDF does not provide specific details on incentives, eligibility, capacity targets or implementation mechanisms (source is not a PDF, omit what it does not say). The upcoming portal is expected to provide a dedicated platform for the policy, but its functions have not yet been detailed. Thus, Tamil Nadu focuses on expanding renewable energy and supporting wider adoption of clean power technologies.
