Envision Energy, a China-based provider of energy technology and battery storage systems, has partnered with Pulse Clean Energy, a UK-based developer and operator of utility-scale battery storage assets. The companies will deliver a 129 MW/310 MWh BESS in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, UK, under a partnership presented at Intersolar Europe in Munich, Germany. Envision will provide a system-level storage package for the project, while Pulse Clean Energy intends to build and operate the facility.
The project was initially designed as a two-hour battery system. Envision has reconfigured the design to provide 2.4 hours of storage, increasing the system's discharge duration while retaining the stated 129 MW power rating and 310 MWh energy capacity. The partners said the change was made in response to evolving grid requirements in the UK. Financial terms, construction dates and the expected commissioning schedule were not provided.
Envision's delivery will integrate its Gen 7 BESS platform, battery technology and grid-forming capabilities. The grid-forming function is intended to support grid stability, while the storage system will provide additional flexibility for balancing electricity supply and demand. Envision will also draw on its UK-based team for grid integration and Balance-of-Plant work associated with the facility.
The project is intended to support renewable electricity integration and reinforce the regional electricity system in the West Midlands. The partners also linked the facility to rising electricity requirements associated with electrification and to the energy needs of local manufacturing and logistics operations. Envision said an independent third party had completed environmental, social and governance due diligence related to the project. The release did not identify the organisation that carried out the review or disclose its findings.
Henry Peng, Senior Vice President of Envision Energy and President of its EU and LATAM regions, said the project combines energy storage with the company's AI-based Future Energy Systems approach. He connected the deployment with renewable integration, industrial decarbonisation and the development of a more adaptable electricity system.
Aazzum Yassir, Director of Technology and Operations at Pulse Clean Energy, said battery storage can balance electricity supply and demand, improve grid security and support lower electricity costs for consumers and businesses. He said the project would strengthen the electricity system serving the West Midlands and provide value to the local grid, communities and businesses.
Vasilis Ntanovasilis, Director of Asset Delivery at Pulse Clean Energy, said Envision's storage technology and system integration experience aligned with Pulse's plans to build and operate storage infrastructure in the UK.
