UK-based global renewable energy developer and operator, Sonnedix has completed financial close for its first hybrid solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Portugal. The transaction covers the Sonnedix Acail project with 28 MW of solar PV and 24 MW of battery storage and the Sonnedix Felgueiras project with 40 MW of solar PV and 32 MW of BESS capacity.

The projects represent one of the early structured financings arranged with commercial banks in Portugal specifically for hybrid solar and storage developments. The financing structure supports the integrated development of generation and storage assets designed to operate jointly from the construction phase.

According to the company, the solar generation at the projects is expected to begin operations in the Q2 of 2026. The associated battery storage systems are scheduled to follow in Q3 of 2026. Once operational, the facilities will provide combined solar generation and storage capacity capable of managing electricity production and dispatch more effectively.

Both projects were designed as hybrid facilities from the construction phase to enable joint operation and improve alignment between electricity generation and demand.

Sonnedix entered the Portuguese market in 2022 and has expanded its renewable energy presence in the country since then. The company currently operates 301.3 MW of renewable capacity. Along with its operational assets, Sonnedix maintains a pipeline exceeding 300 MW of projects under construction and development across the country.

The financing of both the projects reflects the growing acceptance among commercial banks of hybrid renewable energy assets combining generation and storage. Such financing structures becomes more common as developers integrate battery storage into solar portfolios to improve operational flexibility and revenue diversification.

Beyond Portugal, the company expects to pursue additional financings for hybrid BESS projects in other European markets, including Spain and Italy.

Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, said that the financing supports Sonnedix’s hybridisation strategy in Europe by integrating storage with renewable assets to improve portfolio flexibility and support the Portuguese electricity system.

Miguel A. García Mascuñán, CFO of Sonnedix, said that the transaction reflects increasing market maturity in financing hybrid renewable and storage projects while expanding Sonnedix’s financing capabilities in Europe.
