Spain-based renewable energy developer and subsidiary of Jameel Energy Group, Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) has advanced the development of battery energy storage pipeline exceeding 1.2 GW / 5 GWh of across Spain. The portfolio is expected to reach “Ready to Build” status between 2026 and 2027.
The projects are currently at an advanced stage of development and are concentrated in four strategic regions which include Extremadura, Andalusia, Catalonia and Cantabria. The portfolio includes both hybrid projects integrating photovoltaic generation with battery storage and stand-alone of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Extremadura represents the central pillar of FRV’s expansion strategy. The company is progressing hybridization of photovoltaic projects, including the San Serván 220 complex with 6 MW / 225 MWh capacity and Solanilla project with 18 MW / 72 MWh capacity. These hybrid projects are expected to reach Ready to Build status in the Q1 of 2026 following Royal Decree 997/2025.
The Carmonita cluster will form a major component of the region’s pipeline, integrating multiple projects. It includes Carmonita Ministerio with 320 MW / 1,360 MWh capacity, Carmonita Sur with 80 MW / 400 MWh capacity, Carmonita Norte with 91 MW / 455 MWh capacity and Carmonita IV 40 MW / 200 MWh capacity. In addition, San Serván 400 is planned to incorporate 111 MW / 495 MWh of hybrid storage, brings the total hybrid capacity to 652 MW / 3,492 MWh in the Extremadura region.
In Andalusia, the company plans to add 57 MW / 285 MWh of battery storage to its Alcores projects in Seville. Catalonia represents another major focus area where the company is planning 6 stand-alone battery facilities totaling 334 MW / 1,336 MWh located across provinces of Barcelona, Girona and Tarragona. These projects will contribute to grid stability in regions with high levels of renewable energy transition.
In Cantabria, the Santander BESS Camarreal project adds 50 MW / 200 MWh storage system in the municipality of Camargo. Construction is scheduled to begin Q2 of 2026.
The portfolio structure combines hybridization of existing photovoltaic assets with the development of independent storage systems. This approach is planned to optimize asset utilization, increase operational flexibility and support grid stability through dispatchable storage capacity. The staged development timeline between 2026 and 2027 aligns with Spain’s broader expansion of utility-scale battery storage infrastructure.
