Danish renewable energy company, European Energy has completed a 65 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at its 78.5 MW Anykščiai solar park in Lithuania, marking the company’s first operational battery project in the Baltic States. The battery installation is scheduled to begin operations in February 2026. The integration of energy storage with an existing solar asset, European Energy is transforming the Anykščiai site from a traditional solar park into a hybrid renewable energy park, combining solar with battery storage.
The Anykščiai solar park is fully operational and is among the largest solar projects in the Baltic region. It is also the first solar facility in Lithuania to be connected to the electricity balancing market. Once the battery system is commissioned, it will provide additional balancing services along with electricity generation, supporting both the stability and flexibility of the electricity system.
According to the company, over the past five years, renewable energy development in Lithuania has increased with significant growth in both solar and wind capacity. As the share of variable renewable generation increases, the need for flexibility solutions and reliable system operation has become critical.
Energy storage systems allow electricity produced during periods of high solar output to be stored and released when demand increases or generation declines. This functionality supports grid operation stability, reduces risk of curtailment, and helps moderate price volatility. The battery system is expected to support Lithuania’s electricity system as solar, and wind installations continue to increase.
The battery project forms part of European Energy’s broader activities in Lithuania, which include renewable project development, asset optimization and portfolio management. The company currently operates around 380 MW of renewable energy capacity in the country. An additional 800 MW is in development across solar, wind and energy storage projects.
