German public-sector bank, NORD/LB Norddeutsche Landesbank has arranged a financing package for the 238 MWh Schuby battery energy storage system (BESS) in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The financing supports Storage system being developed by ECO STOR, a Germany-based battery storage developer and places the project among the larger utility-scale storage installations planned in the German market. The facility is scheduled to go live in mid-2026.

According to the company, the Schuby facility includes 64 battery modules and 31 inverters across a site comparable to three football fields, ranking among Germany’s higher-capacity battery storage projects and capable of supplying short-term electricity for around 20,000 households, depending on load profiles and discharge duration.

On completion, the Schuby battery energy storage system is expected to add to Germany’s growing portfolio of grid-connected storage assets and support ongoing integration of renewable generation into the national electricity system. Germany plans around 100 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030, a target expected to rely on private investment, with the Schuby project using commercial financing and early construction to secure grid connection capacity.

Florian Hock, Senior Director at NORD/LB, said the bank supported ECO STOR in financing the project and noted that expanding storage capacity requires significant investment.

Jörn Rohland, CFO of ECO STOR, said the financing showed that large-scale battery storage projects in Germany could be developed with private capital without government subsidies.
