Technology provider ABB has launched its updated Proteus photovoltaic (PV) and BESS portfolio. The product lineup includes central solar inverters, bi-directional converter stations and advanced control systems for large-scale applications. The equipment is designed to address demand for power conversion and grid integration solutions as renewable energy generation expands.
The main purpose of the portfolio launch is to support large renewable and storage projects as more solar and BESS assets are connected to electricity grids. ABB said the portfolio helps manage power flow, improve energy yield and support grid stability through its inverters, bi-directional converter stations and control systems.
ABB cited the International Energy Agency’s “Renewables 2025” report, which estimates that utility-scale renewable electricity generation could rise 60% in the next four years. The company said large solar projects in the U.S., China and India are creating more demand for inverters, converter stations and control systems used in grid-connected projects.
The updated portfolio delivers power conversion efficiency of up to 99.45%, supporting higher energy yield for power producers. ABB said the system keeps total harmonic distortion (THDi) below 0.7%, helping reduce equipment stress and extend system lifetime.
The portfolio uses hybrid liquid and air cooling to support long-term operational reliability. ABB said the new Proteus inverter also features optimized airflow management and enhanced build quality to improve reliability and performance across different operating environments.
The compact design is intended to reduce transport costs and make installation easier by limiting the amount of assembly required at project sites.
As variable renewable energy sources increase grid variability, storage systems are becoming important for balancing generation and consumption. ABB’s Proteus BESS solutions include bi-directional converter stations that manage power flow into and out of battery systems.
The portfolio is designed to work with different battery technologies, allowing developers to use the conversion system across various BESS projects. The control systems of ABB’s Proteus portfolio also support grid-forming and black-start operation, which can help with grid stability and restoration after outages.
Daniel Gerber, Business Line Manager for Renewable Power at ABB, said the energy transition requires scalable and proven power conversion technologies. He noted that ABB has installed more than 120 GW of power conversion capacity globally to date.
ABB said the portfolio is designed for a 30-year service life and is supported by lifecycle services, local engineering and service capabilities. The company operates in more than 70 countries and supports utilities, EPC contractors and renewable energy developers across major regions. The announcement also notes ABB’s wider electrification and automation business, with around 110,000 employees globally and listings on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.
