CIP begins 11.5 MW energy-integrated data centre in Denmark

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), a Denmark-based investment firm focused on energy infrastructure, has started construction of Dansk Data Center 1 (DDC1) with Thylander and Plexar at the Port of Esbjerg in Denmark. The Danish-owned, multi-tenant colocation data centre has a stated size of 11.5 MW. PensionDanmark, the Thylander Group and CIP, through its CI Microgrid Electrification Fund, own the project, while PensionDanmark is the lead investor.

The facility is scheduled to be commissioned during Q4 2027. Thylander will handle operations, maintenance and asset management after construction. DDC1 is being developed to combine digital infrastructure with the local energy system, with the developers aiming to establish a framework for similar Danish data centres.

DDC1 will connect to the local power grid through grid operator N1 with an 11.5 MW connection. Plexar is providing energy management that can adjust electricity consumption in response to available grid capacity. Smart storage is also planned to support stable operation and allow the data centre to participate more actively in balancing the energy system.

The project also includes plans to work with DIN Forsyning to use excess heat from DDC1 for district heating. Its cooling system will operate as a closed circular system in which water is reused to reduce water waste. The developers have linked these measures to their plans for greater local resource utilisation at the Esbjerg site.

CIP was founded in 2012 and invests through its funds in solar and wind power generation, energy storage, transmission and distribution, bioenergy, low-carbon fuels and carbon capture. Plexar Energy was founded in 2025 and develops industrial microgrids combining local generation, energy storage and energy management.
