In April 2026, Amazon announced nine new Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) in Australia totalling 430 MW of clean energy to the grid and bring the company's total renewable capacity to nearly 1GW (990MW) nationwide once fully operational, with eight of them featuring co-located BESS. This marks their first solar-plus-storage PPAs outside the US.
Amazon, widely known as an online marketplace, has entered the BESS sector, by purchasing renewable energy to securing ownership and long-term control of integrated solar-plus-storage projects. As of early 2026, Amazon has secured over 1.5 GW of battery storage capacity through various projects. Amazon has enabled the development of 10 solar energy projects paired with battery energy storage systems to date–representing nearly 1.5GW of battery energy storage capacity.
The newly signed PPAs comprises: One wind farm, Three utility-scale solar-plus-battery projects, Four distributed solar-battery systems, An additional battery installation at the Mokoan Solar Farm.
All these assets enhance grid reliability and increases carbon-free energy supply across New South Wales and Victoria. This marks Amazon’s largest annual renewable energy investment in Australia, supporting its goal of reaching net-zero carbon operations by 2040 under The Climate Pledge. Data from BloombergNEF shows Amazon as the leading corporate purchaser of carbon-free energy in Australia in 2025 and among the top buyers globally.
A notable aspect of this announcement is its emphasis on battery storage. Eight of the nine agreements include battery energy storage systems, marking Amazon’s first solar-battery hybrid projects in Australia and its first such deployments outside the United States.
Regional community integration
Several projects show how renewable energy can operate for existing land uses. The Muswellbrook solar farm is built on rehabilitating brownfield land, including former coal mining areas by supporting site restoration. The other projects enable agricultural co-use with livestock grazing between solar panels.
Amazon’s renewable energy projects across Australia
Amazon has invested roughly AU$2.8 billion in Australian renewable projects since 2020. By these investments, companies like Amazon are not just helping to power their own operations and also adds brand-new sources of carbon-free energy to the power grid that everyone uses—the same grid that powers homes, hospitals, and schools by investing in these types of new renewable energy projects. Once fully operational, around 20 projects are expected to deliver nearly 1 GW (990 MW) of new renewable capacity, sufficient to supply electricity equivalent to more than 500,000 Australian households annually.

Amazon’s latest investment supports its AU$20 billion (~$13.3B) data centre expansion in Australia by 2029, strengthening cloud and AI infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is also advancing water management initiatives, including treated wastewater use for cooling.
