Arevon Energy, Inc., a US energy developer, owner and operator, announced construction progress at its 250 MW / 1,000 MWh Cormorant Energy Storage Project in Daly City, California, on September 16, 2026. The battery energy storage system (BESS) is expected to begin operations in 2027 and will be capable of powering 321,000 homes for up to four hours during peak electricity demand.
Arevon is developing the project and will own and operate it. Construction is being undertaken in partnership with Primoris Services Corporation's Renewables group. The facility will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology and employ approximately 175 workers at peak construction.
Construction began in March 2026. Arevon marked the project's progress with an event attended by project partners, state and local officials, business and labour leaders, and community members.
The facility will store electricity during periods of lower demand and dispatch it when demand is highest, supporting grid reliability in California. Arevon expects the project to generate more than $73 million in property tax revenue over its lifetime, supporting schools, infrastructure improvements and public services.
The company also estimates that Cormorant will save more than 4.2 billion gallons of water over its lifetime and avoid 174,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually.
Cormorant is backed by a long-term offtake agreement with MCE, an electricity provider serving more than 1.8 million residents and businesses across Contra Costa, Marin, Napa and Solano counties.
The project was originally planned at 188 MW / 752 MWh before being expanded to 250 MW / 1,000 MWh. MCE contracted for the additional capacity, extending the scope of its agreement with Arevon.
As part of the agreement, more than $500,000 will be distributed to local community programmes. Arevon has also supported more than a dozen local and regional organisations through donations, sponsorships, scholarships, memberships and volunteer activities.
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has supported the project since 2024 through the state's Tracking Energy Development Task Force. According to the CPUC, more than 20 GW of new clean resources are expected to come online by 2032 to meet reliability requirements.
Arevon currently has more than 4 GW of renewable energy capacity operating in California. Its recent milestones include operations commencing at the Nighthawk, Peregrine and Condor energy storage projects, alongside the Eland and Vikings solar-plus-storage projects.
Cormorant will add four-hour battery storage capacity to Arevon's California portfolio, supporting electricity supply during peak-demand periods and contributing to the state's grid reliability requirements.
