Naturgy advances 78 MWh BESS projects in Canary Islands

Battery storage deployment in the Canary Islands is gaining momentum as Naturgy progresses four BESS projects combining solar and wind hybridization. Backed by more than €19.5 million (~ $22.18 million) in investment, the projects will add 22.5 MW and 78 MWh of storage capacity, strengthening grid flexibility and renewable energy integration across the archipelago.

Naturgy, a Spain-based energy company engaged in electricity generation, renewable energy development and energy infrastructure, has advanced the development of four battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Spain's Canary Islands. The projects are intended to expand the company's renewable energy portfolio and support grid stability across the archipelago. During a site visit, Spain's Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, and the Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, inspected the BESS El Escobar project in Ingenio and the BESS Piletas I project in Agüimes, the first two storage hybridization projects that Naturgy expects to complete during 2026. 

The two projects represent a combined investment of €9.2 million and were selected under the first grant programme for renewable electricity generation facilities in the Canary Islands. The initiative forms part of Spain's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and is financed through the European Union's NextGenerationEU programme administered by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). 

Naturgy is also developing two additional battery storage projects—BESS Fuerteventura and BESS Puerto del Rosario—which involve investments of €6.8 million and €3.4 million, respectively. These projects are scheduled for completion in 2028. Collectively, the four projects represent an investment of more than €19.5 million. 

Together, the developments will add 22.5 MW of renewable generation capacity and 78 MWh of battery storage. Once operational, Naturgy's renewable portfolio in the Canary Islands will increase from 145 MW to 168 MW. 

The El Escobar project combines dual battery technologies with a supercapacitor system to improve operational flexibility and response time. Meanwhile, the Piletas I project integrates battery storage with an existing wind installation as part of a hybrid renewable energy configuration. 

The Canary Islands host four of the 17 battery storage projects that Naturgy is developing across Spain. These projects are designed to store surplus renewable electricity during periods of high generation and supply it back to the grid when production declines or demand increases. The storage systems are intended to improve renewable energy integration, enhance grid reliability and reduce renewable energy curtailment. 

Naturgy currently operates 23 renewable energy facilities in the Canary Islands, including 12 wind farms and 11 photovoltaic plants, with a combined annual generation capacity of approximately 394 GWh. According to the company, these assets account for around 15% of the renewable generation capacity currently operating in the archipelago and help avoid more than 285,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
