Three Bulgarian BESS assets totaling 30 MW/76 MWh have been acquired by GEN-I Invest. The June 2026 transaction covers the Belovo, Momchilgrad and Parvomay 1 systems and increases the company’s battery portfolio to 42 MW/100 MWh.
GEN-I Invest, the GEN-I Group company responsible for investments in renewable energy sources, has completed the acquisition of three BESS assets in Bulgaria. The transaction covers the Belovo, Momchilgrad and Parvomay 1 systems, which have a combined installed capacity of 30 MW and storage capacity of 76 MWh. The acquisition was completed in June 2026.
Following the transaction, GEN-I Invest’s BESS portfolio has increased to 42 MW/100 MWh. The GEN-I Group will manage the participation of the three acquired systems in Bulgaria’s energy markets. The company stated that their operation would contribute to power-system stability in the country.
The acquisition represents GEN-I Invest’s first investment outside Slovenia. The subsidiary focuses on Central and South-Eastern European markets and on the development and acquisition of BESS projects and large renewable energy projects. It previously acquired a battery system in Kidričevo.
GEN-I Group had expanded its international investment activities through the construction of large-scale solar power plants in North Macedonia in 2022 and 2024. Those plants have a combined capacity of 29 MW, and their management was subsequently transferred to GEN-I Invest.
GEN-I Invest aims to secure an additional 100 MW of battery capacity through acquisitions by the end of 2026. Separately, GEN-I Group plans to have approximately 800 MW of battery storage capacity under management by year-end based on signed contracts. Its activities cover investment, operation, optimization and management of battery storage assets.
The company identified Bulgaria’s ten cross-border interconnections, regulated electricity market and investment-support mechanisms as factors behind its entry into the country. It also linked battery storage deployment to renewable energy integration, energy-system flexibility and more efficient energy use.
