Expanding its Italian energy storage footprint, Sonnedix has acquired two standalone battery energy storage projects totaling 260 MW/4-hour in Tuscania from Sphera Energy. The transaction increases the company's global BESS pipeline to approximately 2.8 GW and supports its hybrid renewable energy strategy in one of Europe's fastest-growing storage markets.
Sonnedix, global renewable energy company with an operating and development portfolio of approximately 11 GW, has expanded its battery energy storage business in Italy through the acquisition of a 260 MW/4-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio in Tuscania from Sphera Energy.
The portfolio consists of two adjacent stand-alone battery storage projects of 160 MW/4-hour and 100 MW/4-hour, respectively for a total battery storage capacity of 260 MW. The acquisition has increased Sonnedix's global battery energy storage portfolio size to approximately 2.8 GW which emphasizes the importance of storage in Sonnedix’s renewable energy investment strategy.
The transaction will bolster Sonnedix’s standing in Italy, which is now home to more than 1 GW of operating and contracted renewable capacity after the recent transaction. In early March 2026, Sonnedix has increased its footprint in Italy through the acquisition of six solar photovoltaic facilities with long-term PPAs in place, paving the way for increased generation and hybridization.
Italy has become one of Europe's fastest-growing battery storage markets as the country increases renewable energy deployment and seeks greater power system flexibility. Battery energy storage systems help to balance electricity supply and demand, integrate larger volumes of intermittent solar and wind generation, reduce renewable energy curtailment and enhance grid reliability during periods of peak demand.
As per the information provided by Sonnedix, the inclusion of battery storage into the current renewable energy portfolio is likely to offer increased flexibility and enhance the value of the renewable electricity since the electricity can be stored and then delivered according to the need. Hybrid renewable projects that include both solar power generation as well as battery storage form an integral part of the future strategy of the firm.
The Tuscania acquisition also reflects broader investment trends across Europe, where developers are increasingly pairing battery storage with renewable generation to improve energy security, optimize asset performance and participate in evolving electricity markets.
Sonnedix has stated that Italy remains priority market within its international growth strategy due to its supportive renewable energy policies, expanding storage opportunities and increasing demand for flexible generation resources. The company expects battery storage to play an increasingly important role as renewable energy penetration continues to rise across the Italian electricity system.
By expanding its storage portfolio in Italy, Sonnedix aims to strengthen its capability to deliver flexible renewable power while supporting the country's ongoing energy transition and upgrading of the grid in the country.
