EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Germany-based battery storage operator terralayr has secured €192 million in growth equity, led by Eurazeo, to accelerate deployment of grid-scale battery energy storage systems in Germany and scale its LAYR digital flexibility platform. The funding targets rising grid flexibility needs driven by renewables growth, electrification, data centres, and system balancing requirements.

  • Company: terralayr

  • Location: Germany

  • Project: Grid-Scale BESS Portfolio & LAYR Platform

  • Equity Raise: €192 Million

  • Upsizing Option: €80 Million

  • Lead Investor: Eurazeo

Germany-based Battery storage operator, terralayr, has completed a €192 million equity raise to fund of its grid-scale battery energy storage portfolio in Germany and the scaling of its digital flexibility platform, LAYR. The transaction was structured in two equity tranches and includes an €80 million upsizing option. European investment firm, Eurazeo led the financing round through its infrastructure strategy and was supported by existing shareholders, including RIVE Private Investment.

The capital raise has addressed rising grid flexibility demand in Germany linked to renewable generation growth, electrification, data centre loads, and system balancing needs. The funding has been allocated to accelerate company’s utility-scale battery energy storage deployment and scale its LAYR platform for route-to-market and asset management services.

terralayr develops, owns, and operates utility-scale battery energy storage systems, supported by its proprietary LAYR software platform. LAYR virtualizes battery assets and provides route-to-market access through tolling structures, flexibility auctions, and risk management tools. The platform supports both terralayr-owned and third-party battery systems, enabling asset owners to participate in power markets while outsourcing market operations.

In Germany, terralayr owns more than 150 MW of operating and under-construction battery storage assets, with close to 200 MW classified as ready-to-build, partially supported by tolling agreements with RWE and Vattenfall. The company has also secured an approximately 8 GW development pipeline through in-house development and co-development partnerships.

LAYR has contracted a growing portfolio of third-party battery assets, which are managed and monetized for their respective owners through terralayr’s software platform. Asset expansion and partnerships, including agreements with Stadtwerke Duisburg and the STEAG Iqony Group, have supported LAYR’s role as a flexibility marketplace and route-to-market solution.

Based on its current asset portfolio and platform operations, terralayr has set out plans to operate a large battery storage fleet in Germany by the end of 2027. The company is also targeting expanded asset management and market access services for battery owners and flexibility buyers.

Philipp Man, Co-Founder and CEO of terralayr, said Eurazeo’s investment, alongside continued backing from RIVE, has supported faster deployment of battery storage assets in Germany and scaling of the LAYR platform for market participation.

Melissa Cohen, Co-Head of Infrastructure at Eurazeo, said terralayr has been developing grid infrastructure addressing flexibility requirements in Germany, supported by a growing asset base and a software-enabled marketplace model.
