Boralex has commissioned the 80 MW / 320 MWh Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage facility in Ontario, its first operational storage project in North America. Developed in collaboration with Walpole Island First Nation, the project strengthens Ontario’s grid reliability, delivers dispatchable capacity and ancillary services, and supports Boralex’s 2030 growth strategy.

Canada-based renewable power producer, Boralex inc., has commissioned the 80 MW / 320 MWh Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage facility in the Municipality of Lakeshore, Ontario, marking its first operational energy storage project in North America. 

The project, previously known as the Tilbury Battery Storage Project, was renamed “Sanjgon” following collaboration with Walpole Island First Nation (WIFN). The name is derived from the Nishnaabemwin language and refers to traditional storage practices. 

The collaboration is structured as a joint approach between Boralex and Walpole Island First Nation, with defined participation across the project's lifecycle. In parallel, a Community Benefit Agreement with the Municipality of Lakeshore provides annual payments of CAD 1,000 (USD 740) per MW for the operational life of the project. These payments are allocated to support local and municipal initiatives. 

According to the company, the Sanjgon facility is equipped with 89 Tesla Megapack 2XL units, which are integrated, utility-scale lithium-ion battery systems. The configuration enables the provision of dispatchable capacity, frequency regulation, and grid balancing services during peak demand periods. The project was selected under the Independent Electricity System Operator’s Expedited Long-Term Request for Proposals and is part of Ontario’s Resource Adequacy Framework. 

Following the commercial operation of the Sanjgon facility, Boralex has continued to expand its battery energy storage portfolio in Canada. The planned commissioning of the Hagersville Battery Energy Storage Park is expected to increase the company’s installed storage capacity in the country to 380 MW. Additional battery storage projects, including the Oxford facility, are in advanced development phases and are preparing for construction in the near future. 

Patrick Decostre, President and CEO of Boralex, stated that the commissioning of the Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage facility supported the company’s 2030 Strategy by increasing operating storage capacity and expanding its North American portfolio. 

Leela Thomas, Chief of Walpole Island First Nationshorten, said that the Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage facility marked an important project milestone achieved through collaboration with Boralex, supporting long-term community participation in grid-scale energy infrastructure development. 

Lesley Gallinger, President and CEO, Independent Electricity System Operator, said that the Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage project resulted from competitive procurement supporting Ontario grid reliability through multi-stakeholder collaboration.
