ICG, a London-based global alternative asset manager, has entered a partnership with Hanwha Energy Corporation Japan (HECJ) to collaborate on renewable energy, energy transition and infrastructure opportunities in Japan. The agreement was announced through ICG APAC Infra, the Asia-Pacific Infrastructure strategy of ICG.
The collaboration will focus on exploring, investing in and developing projects in Japan. The stated areas include renewable energy, digital infrastructure, solar and BESS assets. Japan has been identified as a key market for ICG APAC Infra because of demand for decarbonization solutions and long-term investment opportunities across these sectors.
The partnership builds on ICG’s existing activity in Japan. ICG has investments in Voltaiyo, a solar platform, and Ray8, a BESS platform. These platforms show ICG’s existing exposure to both solar and battery storage opportunities in the Japanese market. ICG said the agreement with HECJ is expected to support its project sourcing in Japan and help identify project opportunities in the country.
HECJ is the Japanese integrated renewable energy platform of Hanwha Group. Hanwha Group is Korea’s fifth largest conglomerate, a Fortune Global 500 company and has a 17.8 GW development track record across the US, Europe and APAC. HECJ adds development experience in Japan, while ICG adds investment experience through its infrastructure strategy in the region.
Solar and battery storage assets are part of the stated focus areas. The partnership is intended to support Japan’s transition to a lower-carbon economy through new infrastructure opportunities. The companies will also assess related infrastructure sectors aligned with Japan’s energy transition and digital infrastructure requirements.
Devarshi Das, Head of ICG Asia-Pacific Infrastructure, said Japan remains a core market for the APAC Infrastructure strategy because of long-term fundamentals linked to the energy transition. He said the partnership with HECJ supports local project sourcing and provides access to a pipeline of opportunities.
Hoonjong Choi, President of Hanwha Energy Corporation Japan, said the partnership combines HECJ’s development experience in Japan with ICG’s global investment platform. HECJ said the collaboration is intended to extend pipeline activity and support Japan’s energy transition.
ICG and HECJ plan to pursue BESS, solar and infrastructure opportunities in Japan. ICG brings its existing Voltaiyo and Ray8 platforms, while HECJ adds local development experience through Hanwha’s Japanese renewable energy platform. Both companies will now work to identify and progress projects that support Japan’s lower-carbon energy transition.
