SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) has reached financial close and is preparing to start construction of two battery energy storage system projects in the Philippines, with a combined capacity of 80 MW. The projects include a 40 MW BESS at the Binga phase 2 hydroelectric power plant and a 40 MW BESS at the Ambuklao hydroelectric power plant in Benguet province, northern Luzon.

SNAP, a joint venture between Oslo-based renewable energy solutions provider, Scatec ASA and Manila-based Aboitiz Power Corporation through its renewables arm, Aboitiz Renewables Inc.

According to the company, the BESS installations are designed to participate in the Philippine reserves market, providing ancillary services such as frequency regulation and grid stability support. Co-location with hydropower assets allows operational coordination between generation and storage, supporting flexible dispatch and asset utilization. The projects build on SNAP’s experience with a 24 MW BESS at the Magat hydropower plant, which has been providing ancillary services since entering operation in 2024.

In addition to the newly financed projects, SNAP currently has 40 MW of BESS capacity under construction at the Binga hydropower plant and 16 MW under construction at the Magat facility. These systems are scheduled to reach commercial operation later in 2026. With the addition of the Binga Phase 2 and Ambuklao projects, SNAP’s total BESS capacity in operation and construction in the Philippines will reach 160 MW.

The projects will be owned by SNAP and financed through project debt facilities arranged with the joint venture’s existing lenders in the Philippines. Battery energy storage is increasingly deployed in the country due to fast response capability, ability to provide multiple grid services, and suitability for supporting power systems with rising levels of variable renewable generation.

Construction activities for the Binga Phase 2 and Ambuklao BESS projects are expected to begin following financial close, with the systems intended to support grid reliability and reserves market requirements in the Luzon power system overall.

Terje Pilskog, CEO of Scatec ASA, said that construction of the additional BESS projects will expand operational battery capacity in the Philippines sixfold within a year, increasing portfolio value and ancillary services availability.
